The big difference with this story is the parents who are trying to make their daughter a priority but are simply unable to cope. Although with this child there are other issues that make life much harder. It feels uncomfortably voyeuristic to be looking at the orphanage and there is no avoiding thinking about the children left behind - where are they now?Ĭathy's involvement with this child covers many of the problems she frequently deals with around bad behaviour and lack of routine. These parents have been very honest about their experience and the reader is able to understand why Anna is so damaged by her early years. This book is different from her usual stories though as half of the book describes this child's story before she gets to her foster home. Starting this book is a comfort with Cathy's straight forward approach, I'd been struggling to concentrate on reading so decided to come back to something safe for a while and hopefully get my "mojo" back.

The two halves of my life - writer and foster carer - came together in 2007 when I wrote about a child I'd fostered and the book immediately became a number one best seller. Like many writers it was a hobby - something I did almost furtively in my spare time, while working, and then later fostering and looking after my family. In my teens I began writing short stories, articles, a few radio plays, and entering writing competitions. I have always been a writer - from when I was at school, with poems in the school magazine. I have a degree in education and psychology which I was awarded as a mature student. This is in recognition of my experience and qualifications and means that I am often asked to look after children with complex needs or very challenging behaviour. I have been a foster carer for over twenty-five years and am what's known as a specialist foster carer, sometimes referred to as a level 3 carer. At the same time I became a foster carer, which is the inspiration for much of my writing.
When I left school I held a clerical position in the civil service, which I left to start a family. I live in England and have three children, two birth children and one adopted.
